Maybelline Color Whisper Photos, Swatches, & Review

First there were the Revlon Lip Butter, then Loreal Color Riche, now Maybelline Color Whisper. How could Maybelline stay out the game? Well I'm glad they joined in because they are probably my favorite drugstore brand so I always have high hopes for their products. I will let you know my thoughts on them and how they compare to Loreal and Revlon.

The packaging I love! They are the slimmest and sleekest lipstick that I own which I can highly appreciate. I hate unnecessary packing and we all know when we have a small clutch with limited space how this comes in handy. The lids correspond to the color in the tube (for some but not all). The cap is easy to take off and put back on and unlike the Loreal ones you don't have to lock it into any groove.

The formula of these is a gel-silicone base. This means that the color goes on very smooth and glides on super easy. Also the colors don't go on patchy on the lips which I find can sometimes happen with the Revlon lip butters. The lighter colors are buildable but the very dark colors don't need hardly any building up and go on super pigmented. These are the most lightweight on the lips in my opinion. The lip butters from Revlon feel the heaviest on the lips.

The darker the color the longer that they last. The interesting thing that I also found with the darker colors was that they were also slightly staining my lips. I can highly appreciate that. I don't get that from Revlon or Loreal. These are not meant to be long lasting though so if you get a few hours from these that would be expected. If you want something really long lasting this is not the product.

I prefer these to the Revlon lip butters since they don't have any shimmer in them, the packaging is more sleek, and they feel more lightweight on my lips. I will still continue to purchase some of the lip butters I just think I like these more. The Loreal I only have one of so its hard to say but I can appreciate that they are lightweight on my lips and do not dry them out.

Speaking of dryness I didn't think that these really dried out my lips. After a few hours I did feel like I needed to reapply or put on lip balm but I think that is normal. Revlon and Loreal I don't really find drying either. The lip butters may be a teeny bit glossier than these but they are very similar. There are 20 shades to choose from so the color selection is very large. Everyone should be able to find a color that they enjoy.

A Plum Prospect- This is probably one of the darker colors in the line and it is a natural berry toned lip. I just love my pinky/purple colors. I couldn't find any dupes for this in my collection.

Oh La Lilac- A soft sheer lilac color but looks purple/pink on the lips. I am fair skinned with brown hair and brown eyes and I really liked this color on me. I couldn't find any dupes.

Berry Ready-This is the darkest and most opaque in my opinion. This is a deep berry/plum tone with red undertones. This is a perfect winter lip. If you are looking for something more sheer though I would skip this one. I did find some dupes in my collection which I will show to you.

Coral Ambition- This is one of the lighter colors in the range but I am a sucker for coral for Spring/Summer. The color is a beautiful peach/coral. Because it is so sheer I felt like I wanted a gloss on top of it since my lips are super chapped in the wintertime. I already have a similar color though so this will go back to the store but it's beautiful.

Faint for Fuschia-This is a pale pink color but not the frosty pale pink lip type. It's actually a very wearable pale pink. In the swatch it looks darker but on my lips it comes off a bit more pale. I enjoy it though. No pink dupes for this color either.

So these are the dupes that I found for Berry Ready and why I'm not going to keep it. I think Illamasqua Magnetism is probably the closest color. Now granted the formulations are very different I still feel like the color payoff is similar enough not to warrant me having this color.

Next up for my dupes is a dupe for Coral Ambition. I found that Dior Addict Extreme lipstick in Saint Tropez is very similar  The Dior one is $30 so if you don't have the Dior and want a similar color I would say give Coral Ambition a try.

You can see when the caps come off how truly sleek the Maybelline ones are. I really prefer that. Also I find that with the Revlon ones the color seems to always get all over the rim. I don't find that this happens with the Maybelline and Loreal ones.

I think that these swatches do a good job of showing you the texture of each lipstick, the glossiness, and the weight of each. From left to right they look heaviest to lightest in terms of texture.

I found mine at CVS for about $8.99 but I'm sure you can find them cheaper many other places. Overall I really do like this formulation and think once again that Maybelline has created a great product. My favorites are A Plum Prospect and Oh La Lilac.  I plan to only keep the unique colors to my collection but really enjoy them all. If you like the lip butters or the Color Riche from Loreal I say give them a try. You are bound to find one color that you will enjoy. I would love to hear your thoughts on these if you have tried them out.

  6. Nice review. I thought the Baby Lips were supposed to be Maybelline's version of the Lip Butters, but these do look more similar. I definitely want to check them out. While I think I prefer the packaging of the Revlon the best, the colour selection of these looks awesome!

  15. Great review! A huge deciding factor for me is what it smells like (I was going to get the L'Oreal version, but it smelled way too vanilla-y for me), so I was wondering what the Colour Whispers smell like. Do they all have the same scent, or different corresponding scents like the Baby Lips?
